blog on Facilitation as an Agile Coach

Facilitation is all about enabling and empowering the participants and this is done through a series of conscious actions by the facilitator.

  1. No Authority: The management must give authority to the to the teams and at all times authority must be deflected back to the team when the team look to the coach to for either approval or to lead or take up authority!
  2. Positioning: Where one sits and faces sends a powerful message to the all at the table. Its important to choose to be out of sight but at the same time be able to make eye contact with key people and to be able to observe everything that is going one
  3. Body Language: Is another unspoken tool. The coach’s expressions, eye contacts made during a conversation, length of look, directing looks — all send messages to the the people in the room, making notes, moving around, etc.
  4. Invite facilitation: Draw the members into discussion by inviting them to take part.

In my view Points to be a successful facilitator:

Point 1: will be good if the management does give the group authority

Point 2 and 3 — are simple and easy to put into practice.

Point 4 — However, the art of invite facilitation will need to be practiced and fine tuned.
